I'm excited about the United Way of Southeast Louisiana's 17th Annual Got Gumbo? Cookoff I'm judging tomorrow night. If you like gumbo, you'll want to put this one on your calendar. It's at the Royal Sonesta in New Orleans. Tasty. I learned many years ago, no matter how good the gumbo, taste and move on, because there are many more bowls come. Enter to win: Lafayette is giving away an awesome Mardi Gras package: two nights' stay, several meals, VIP passes, and much more. Click here for details and get busy entering! Something else to put on your calendar- Louisiana's own Chef John Folse is teaming up with Charleston, SC hog farmer Tank Jackson for the second annual Fête des Bouchers at White Oak Plantation on February 18. The event is open to only 100 spectators; tickets are $50 in advance and may be purchase by calling White Oak Planataion at 225-751-1882. You'll find me there with a fork in my back pocket! My PSA of the week: under no circumstances should you run the self-clean cycle of your oven with silicone heat protectors, cooking mats, etc. in it. Click for a photo of the results; the good news is, I got a new stove out of the fiasco. The bad news is, I had to buy a new stove. And a new vacuum cleaner, because I vacuumed some of the debris out before consulting with some of my smarter chemist and biologist friends. The other good news is, I now obsessively check the oven before even thinking about turning it on. As I'm sure you know, tornadoes devastated swathes of southeastern Louisiana earlier this week; many people lost everything they owned, and are relying on shelters and food banks to help them get body and soul together. Should you find yourself in a position to aid, NOLA.com has a comprehensive list of ways you can contribute. Enjoy this week's recipes, share them with family and friends, and, as always, let me know what's on your mind. Also, keep in mind that food banks struggle this time of year; consider making a donation if at all possible.
