Last chance to subscribe and receive the upcoming March/April edition of the magazine; it mails on Monday. Last weekend the promise of spring was in the air. Shorts and t-shirts weather, the tropicals that were killed back by the cold snap before Christmas were showing green, and a few of the trees around are starting to bud. Then Monday the temperature plumeted, and many of you have had snow and ice to deal with. It hasn't been that cold here in New Orleans, but it's still pretty damp miserable for my tropical blood. This week's recipes have that in mind. There's a seafood stew that, while best smoked over some hot coals, will be delicious in a Dutch oven on the stove top. A shrimp and corn stew, finished off with smokey bacon if you'd like, will tempt you with the promise of summer. And finally, Ms. Edna Lewis' foolproof method for making hot, fluffy buttermilk biscuits that are appropriate any time of the day or night. Now that Mardi Gras is over, we are coming up on spring festival season. Louisiana has more festivals than there are days in the year - there's rarely a dearth of something to do, and this coming weekend is no exception. A blues festival in Shreveport, a gumbo cookoff on the Northshore, or, should you be more inclined to indoors, the Pontchartrain Home Show is this weekend in Kenner. See the calendar of events below for links to more details. Whatever you do this weekend, enjoy this week's recipes, share them with family and friends, and, as always, let me know what's on your mind.
