It is hard to believe that the year is halfway over next week, but it is. This past weekend marked the summer solstice, and we needed as much daylight as possible on Saturday -- we went deep into bayou country Saturday for a family photo shoot in Pierre Part, then took the back roads through New Iberia and St. Martinville into Breaux Bridge. On Sunday, LK&C charter subscriber Debbie Guidry Gautier gathered up a handful of men and women known for their expertise in the kitchen, and they cooked up some old family recipes for us. I felt like I was in the kitchen with my grandmother. It's hard to say whether the food or the conversation was more interesting -- you'll read all about it in our September/October issue, and received a thorough review of the suble differences in Cajun culture throughout Acadiana. If you're not a subscriber to the print magazine, you might want to get yourself on the list today so you don't miss out. Last night I helped the Roosevelt Hotel celebrate the 120th anniversary of the famous Blue Room. I'd love to go back in time and see Frank Sinatra perform there -- what a time that must have been. Tune in to the Travel Channel on Wednesday, July 2 at 8PM CST to see New Orleans native chef David Guas turn up the heat as the host of the network's first grilling competition show “American Grilled." Host Guas, known in culinary circles for his expert take on Southern cuisine at his restaurant Bayou Bakery, Coffee Bar & Eatery in Arlington, VA, sizzles the contestants in this high heat, high stakes challenge with surprise, indigenous ingredients (blue crab in Maryland, quail in Georgia, and T-bone steaks in Texas, to name a few) . The “American Grilled” series pits backyard grillers and small town cooks against one another in the ultimate outdoor cooking challenge. Each week, four contestants will test their epic backyard skills. With the help of guest judges, Guas determines a master griller in select cities across America for a $10,000 cash prize and bragging rights in each episode. And finally, if you're going to be in New Orleans this weekend, consider this fundraiser Saturday, June 28: Kicking Cancer in the Gut: a Fundraiser for Chef Carl Shaubhut. Diagnosed with cancer earlier this year, local chefs are putting on an extravaganza to raise money for Carl's treatment. Click here for details. Enjoy this week's recipes, share them with family and friends, and, as always, let me know what's on your mind.
