My sister-in-law Sandy flies in tonight and we're going to get up tomorrow and drive over to Lake Charles for their annual wine festival, Rouge et Blanc. We'll enjoy the wine dinner Friday night at La Truffe Sauvage, have a lazy Saturday morning, then enjoy the festival all afternoon. We'll make a leisurely trip back to New Orleans Sunday afternoon. Monday night we're going to the launch party for John Besh's new cookbook Cooking from the Heart -- I can't wait to taste my way through that one. LK&C team members David and Cara are traveling the state next week -- Lake Charles, Washington, Alexandria, Shreveport/Bossier, and various points in between. We've been going over shot lists and recipe selections this week in advance of the trip, and I'm wondering why I'm not going with them -- they've got a very interesting and tasty week ahead of them. We're Now Accepting Orders for Holiday Gift Subscriptions. The holidays are right around the corner -- it's November next week, as hard as that is to believe. We offer options ranging from $25 for a one-year subscription to $65 for the entire first three years of the magazine; one of the packages is bound to be perfect for several people on your shopping list. Packages and/or custom gift cards will ship to your gift recipients the first week of December. Quantities on some issues are limited, so go ahead, place your order, and check a few people off your list. We're in the middle of Festal Season. Take a look at the extensive list below of what's happening around the state. If you stay home and get bored, you have no one to blame but yourself! Enjoy this week's recipes, share them with family and friends, and, as always, let me know what's on your mind.

Chicken StewThis old-fashioned chicken stew comes from the 1970 printing of Cookin' on the Horseshoe. It's a collection of recipes from the False River community, and many of them read as if an old country cook who'd never followed a recipe talked the writer through the preparation. Priceless, in other words. |

Biscuit-Cloaked Seafood GumboMy mother-in-law passed the cookbook As American as Apple Pie on to me when she gave up cooking. The premise of the book is variations on 20 different American classics; this one comes from the Pot Pie section and is from Helen Johnson of New Iberia, in the heart of Cajun country. |

Black Forest Ham and Gruyere PaniniDeadlines have been coming fast and furious lately and sandwiches have been on the dinner menu more often than I like to admit. Fortunately, my local Rouses market now stocks Columbus-brand deli meat, and I think their Black Forest Ham is the best around. This recipe courtesy of Lodge Manufacturing takes the blah out of sandwiches for dinner. |
