My friend Karen Lowery (she is also a brilliant private chef and the food stylist for the Louisiana Kitchen & Culture print edition) told me about a cool new place that just opened in my neighborhood. Jack Petronella and Coleman Jernigan recently brought Manhattanjack (manhattanjack.com), a hipster coffee house/ bakery and confection shop to Prytania Street in Uptown New Orleans. The wide-open space with a long case of freshly baked breads, both sweet and savory pastries, and poured chocolates, is outfitted with chic, comfortable sofas and piles of culinary magazines (including ours) that invite lingering. Jack, a Culinary Institute of America grad with 25 years of food and beverage experience, and Coleman, an experienced barista, started planning their concept two years ago. They moved to New Orleans to bring exceptional coffee and pastry together in one place. " We are tired of sacrificing one for the other," Jack said. "There is a gap in the industry that needs to be met and we are here to do it. A great cup of coffee or espresso paired with an exceptional array of fresh baked products will be offered here every day." Open only two weeks, the plan is to soon introduce breakfast and lunch sandwiches and a menu of "Classics Done Well," like Croque Monsieurs, Monte Cristos and Crawfish Rolls made on fresh, house-baked potato bread rolls. Yum. Also happening in New Orleans (after all, it is Ground Zero with both the Super Bowl and Mardi Gras taking place here in the next few weeks), next Wednesday from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Carolina Panther's Wide Receiver Steve Smith will be hosting a charity dinner at Restaurant August to benefit Samaritan's Feet (samaritansfeet.org), a humanitarian relief organization that washes the feet of the homeless and families in need and provides them with new shoes and socks. Since Samaritan's Feet's inception in 2003, the organization has donated more than 3 million pairs of shoes to the homeless. As part of the "Kick Off Your Shoes" cocktail party and dinner, athletes and celebrities have donated signed shoes for the "Barefoot Auction." NFL players have been signing their game-worn cleats throughout the 2012 NFL season to be auctioned at the event. Proceeds from the event will benefit shoe distributions that will take place in NFL markets throughout the 2013 season. NFL legends, current players and coaches are expected to attend this event and ESPN analyst and NFL great Marcellus Wiley will serve as the Master of Ceremonies. To purchase tickets to the "Kick Off Your Shoes" go to showclix.com/event/3738939. Enjoy this week's recipes, and let us know what's on your mind. Best-
