I missed you last week; Hurricane Eta knocked our power out about 5:00 last Wednesday evening. But we were some of the very lucky ones; it was back on by 9:00 Thursday evening. Some of my friends didn't get back up and running until yesterday. I have to say, I never in all my years thought it would be too chilly to sit outside for a cup of coffee the morning after a hurricane knocked my power out, but it really was too chilly the morning after. I'd had the forthought to grind plenty of coffee beans in advance of the storm, and we have a propane grill, so we did have a hot cup of coffee. We'd just stocked the freezer, thinking hurricane season was over- thankfully, we got enough ice into big storage bins we didn't lose anything. But, I kept out a slab of the DELICIOUS lasagna recipe I developed this fall (you'll see it in the upcoming Holiday Food Guide, in PRINT! later this month) and we heated it up for dinner, along with a pan of broccoli sautéed in garlic and lemon olive oil. Give me heat, and I can turn out a meal! Comfort food below, perfect for cool weather this weekend. We're sending out subscription renewal notices, so keep an eye on your email inbox. Enjoy the recipes below, and, as always, let me know what's on your mind. Wear your mask, wash your hands, and don't touch your face! Best regards,

Chicken-Fried Steak with Cream Gravy From the Williams-Sonoma cookbook "Comfort Food", this recipe is a classic. Spice it up with some Creole seasoning on the steak and in the gravy, and by all means double the gravy portion of the recipe. Have a pot of fluffy white rice or buttery mashed potatoes ready to serve alongside, drenched in gravy. |
