I am heading out next week for a photoshoot in Boyce and another in Alexandria - then on to a meeting with a subscriber in Eunice on Thursday, ending up in Lake Charles for the weekend. I will return to New Orleans on the 26th, loaded with story ideas for upcoming editions of the magazine. That evening I'm meeting an old friend for drinks and dinner; we first met twenty-five years ago in San Francisco. She grew up over in Mississippi where I went to college and now lives in New York; she's doing some consulting work with a group out of Baton Rouge, so I'll be seeing more of her. Her dad likes to cook, and gets LK&C; she told me today that her mother confessed to reading aloud the latest issue on a recent trip from Hattiesburg to New Orleans, deciding what to eat while they were here and what to buy to take back with them, so he could prepare some of the recipes. That's the kind of reader I like! For our family reunion last weekend, I ended up picking up shrimp from the Westwego Shrimp Lot. I boiled them and used half for my favorite pickled shrimp recipe, and made a spicy cocktail sauce for the other half. It was all good, as was everything else on hand that day. I come from a long line of good Southern cooks, evidence on full display on the groaning tables. See our list of what's happening around Louisiana below and find something to do this weekend, even if it's just staying cool. Whatever you decide, enjoy the recipes this week, share them with family and friends, and, as always, let me know what's on your mind.
