Call to Action!! I grew up in the country just north of Pascagoula, MS. My father used our seven acres to pasture a milk cow and raise a calf for the freezer, to tend an acre of lawn and flower beds my brothers and I had to mow and weed, and to grow a huge vegetable garden. Every summer, the instant the corn, peas, tomatoes, okra, and butter beans started producing, my mother made a giant pot of vegetable beef soup and a big pan of cornbread. We gorged on it, and I swoon to think of it today. I want to publish my version of Mom's soup recipe in the July/August issue of the magazine, but the City Girl portion of our team (Jyl) is aghast at the idea of anyone deigning to eat hot soup in the middle of the summer. Dear Reader, you get a say in the matter: click through to this quick poll and let us know what you think. The ACF's New Orleans chapter presents the second annual Best Chefs Louisiana on Monday, April 8; many of our friends are up for awards this year. Tickets are still available, and it's guaranteed to be the best dinner in town Monday night. I'll be there with an appetite. In the Tasty News category, Chef John Besh's Family Table begins airing to the Greater New Orleans area (and parts of south Mississippi) on WYES this Saturday morning. I attended a preview of the show (and tasted some of the food!) a couple of weeks ago, and as usual, WYES has done a fantastic job as producer. And of course, Chef Besh's dishes are delicious. You will find more information about the show here, and can browse some of the recipes he'll be preparing here. If you're outside the WYES broadcast area, check your local public broadcast station for times; a Besh spokesperson tells me the show is airing on American public television nationwide. LK&C readers will recognize the kitchen in which the show is shot; it's where we shot the cover feature for our holiday 2012 issue. The Baton Rouge Epicurean Society teams with Mockler Beverage Company each year to produce Crawfête, a gourmet crawfish tasting and live auction. Baton Rouge's top chefs participate, and tickets are just $50 per person. They sell out quickly, so grab yours now for the April 18 event. Silent auction items include a crawfish boil for 25 people, dinner at Houmas House for ten, and a Drew Brees-autographed football for the family heirloom. Proceeds from the event go to support Baton Rouge area child nutrition programs. Our Spring Special is still running for those of you who are curious about the magazine but not quite willing to commit to a full year's subscription. We're offering a three-issue trial for just $10. Click the ad in the events section below or visit this page. You won't find a better deal than this, and I know that if you like the recipes here, you'll love the magazine. Enjoy this week's recipes, share them with family and friends, and, as always, let us know what's on your mind.

Deanie's Oyster and Artichoke SoupOysters and artichokes were made to go together, and this rich, flavorful soup from Deanie's Seafood does a masterful job of making the most of the flavor combinations. It comes together quickly, but needs to sit refrigerated for 8 hours or so for the flavors to meld. Deanie's Seafood is part of the Louisiana Oyster Trail |
