Welcome to Louisiana Recipes
Next week I'm headed over to Lake Charles for Rouge et Blanc. The If you will, please, take a few minutes to fill out our reader survey; three will win a cool pan from Lodge Cast Iron. While I'm in the Southwestern part of the state, I'm heading to Vernon Parish Saturday (10/20) morning for their second annual cookbook festival; lucky me, I get to judge the Chicken and Dumplings cookoff, which should send my brother Tim into a fit of jealousy. For those of you not lucky enough to sample the wares, we've included an easy recipe below. That same weekend, Jyl is headed to Lafayette for the Black Pot Festival, one near and dear to her; the woman refuses to cook in anything but cast iron. I have an extensive collection myself, but hers borders on obsession. You should see her jambalaya pot. We've made some minor changes to our home page; if you're a member (and like us on Facebook!), you'll now see which of your Facebook friends also like us. We've also added some pumpkin recipes, and invite you to share some of your favorites with us. The cover pictured in the column on the right is on sale now. | Lee Bros. Easy Chicken and Dumplings |

Many southern families have recipes on hand for chicken and dumplings, and those recipes can vary dramatically from kitchen to kitchen. At the richer end of the spectrum are thick, gravy-like stews of braised legs and thighs with dumplings the size of large biscuits nestled among them; at the other end are thin broths with threads of pulled chicken and delicate, noodle-like “rolled” dumplings. Somewhere in between, the fresh, simple version here comes from The Lee Brothers . Though an impressive-looking composed dish, with medallions of chicken breast and homemade noodle-like dumplings,it is perfect for an easy week night dinner. It comes together in a flash. Make it even faster with a store bought rotisserie chicken.

Andouille Festival will be held in LaPlace October 26-28 2012, and the Louisiana Seafood Festival is this weekend in New Orleans. Celebrate them both with this easy pot pie that combines the best of Louisiana in one dish that's easy to make ahead.

Jyl likes to bake a cake when she knows someone is celebrating a birthday. This weekend her friend, Mia Block, will turn 9 and Auntie J plans to show up with a big Caramel Cake as well as a batch of cupcakes for Mia's slumber party. When the girls are hit with a sugar rush and start tearing up the house, Jyl will go home, leaving Mia's mother, Jennifer Springfield, to deal with the chaos. "Been there, done that," Jyl said of little girls' slumber parties. |
