Greetings from sunny New Orleans - the temperature is supposed to drop as the week progresses, but today the windows are open and the birds are singing like it's Easter. NOTE: Last week, in the midst of traveling to Los Angeles, I forgot to include a link for Chef Paul's vegetable beef soup recipe. You can find it here. I live and work just a few blocks on the river side of St. Charles Avenue and have to plan carefully from now through Mardi Gras; it's all too easy to get trapped on the wrong side of a parade and have to either wait it out, or park and walk home -- or drive across the river, turn around and come back so I can exit off the freeway, as we did on the way home from the airport last Sunday. Parades started rolling again here in New Orleans last night, and will continue through Tuesday. Mardi Gras parades are rolling all over the state. While Louisiana may not be the birthplace of Mardi Gras, we can lay claim to the fact that more Mardi Gras parades roll in this state than any other place in the world. We've put together a fairly comprehensive list of parades here; drop us a note if you know of a parade that is NOT listed and we'll update. We are putting the finishing touches on our March/April issue, and it's packed with great recipes. There's a crawfish mac and cheese that made me swoony, and a blackeyed pea and sausage stew that's so good I've made it three times since the original photo shoot. If you subscribe by the end of this month, you'll get a copy for yourself -- let me know what your favorite recipes are from the magazine. Finally, enjoy this week's recipes, share them with family and friends, and, as always, let me know what's on your mind.

Haydel's King Cake Purple - justice | Green - faith | Gold - power. That's what the colors of Mardi Gras represent, and this cake is the perfect vehicle for showing them off. Make two while you're at it. |

Acadian Peppered Shrimp This is a take on the classic BBQ shrimp recipe. For best flavor, leave the shells and heads on, and make sure to serve with lots of warm French bread for soaking up the delectable sauce. |

Okra and Tomatoes with Stewed Chicken & Sausage From our friend George Graham, publisher of the excellent Acadiana Table blog, this is comfort food at its finest. Okra and tomatoes are made for each other, and the addition of chicken and sausage turns this into a one-pot meal. |
