Win tickets Rouge et Blanc! Southwest Louisiana's premiere wine festival takes place toward the end of October in Lake Charles, and this year we've teamed with festival organizers to give away a festival package to one lucky winner. The package includes deluxe accomodations for two nights at L'Auberg du Lac, tickets for two to a wine dinner on Friday, October 25, and tickets for two to the festival on Saturday, October 26. Click here to enter the contest; while we encourage you to subscribe to Louisiana Kitchen & Culture if you don't already do so, no purchase is necessary to win. Click here for more information on the festival. The Baton Rouge Epicurean Society is hosting Fête Rouge next week, with a wine dinner Thursday, August 22, and a food and wine fetê on Friday, August 23. I believe a few tickets are left for both evenings; we're sending a team in to help judge the wines Friday evening. It's a tough job, but someone... well, you know. In other news, the U.S. Commerce Department ruled earlier this week that increased fees will apply to shrimp imported from certain countries, in an effort to offset the lower prices those countries are currently able to offer because of illegal subsidies the respective governments give their fishermen. Gulf coast shrimpers say those subsidies give importers an unfair pricing advantage over domestic shrimp, and were hoping that Indonesia and Thailand would be included in the decision, but they were not. As Thailand represents the largest volume of imported shrimp purchased here in the U.S., David Veal, executive director of the Coalition of Gulf Shrimp Industry calls the ruling a "mixed bag." I've given you a great shrimp recipe below; go out, buy some domestically-harvested shrimp, and make the dish. It's delicious! And finanally, Hatch chiles are in season. If you live in a region that celebrates Southwestern flavors, you may have access to them. My local Rouses is roasting them for pickup; check the schedule here for your local store, or do a google search for Hach Chilis for a roaster near you. Enjoy this week's recipes, share them with family and friends, and, as always, let me know what's on your mind.

Mississippi Mud PieAnother old fashioned Southern recipe, this one is named because it looks like the muddy banks of the Mississippi river. Much more sophisticated than the versions I remember at various pot luck dinners from my childhood, Chef Cory Bahr of Cotton in Monroe gave us this recipe for the Premiere edition of the magazine.
