Holiday gift giving! Many of you give subscriptions to Louisiana Kitchen & Culture to the friends and family you love the most! Your gift renewal list was mailed earlier this month; if for some reason you didn't get it, give us a call: 504.208.9959 or email Jim. There's still plenty of time to add new gift recipients to your list as well; we can start them with the current holiday issue if you'd like, and we'll send a gift card just before Christmas. Click below to order online.

Brrr! Many of you won't sympathize a bit, but I'm going to have to turn on the heater this week. Temps are going to drop into the high 30s at night, and Friday's forecast says we won't get out of the high 40s. That calls for the winter coat! My friend Karen, who works in transportation in upstate New York, is battening down the hatches for a storm with "Lake Effect" snow; she'll snort when she reads this.

I got a handful of new cookbooks recently; two were published a few years ago, and Southern Breads by Marilyn Markel and Chris Holaday is scheduled to publish December 5. It's an interesting read, and includes a collection of old recipes from all over the South that read as if they were written by your grandmother. There is also a nice selection of period photographs. It's 144 pages and will retail for $24.99; it will make a nice gift, in addition to a subscription to LK&C, of course, for the baker on your shopping list. As of press time, preorders are being taken for the discounted price of $14.99; subject to change.

The other two are in the category I'm always a sucker for- easy recipes that call for a minimal amount of time in the kitchen. I spend enough time there for work!

One Pot, From the Kitchens of Martha Stewart Living, features a selection of easy meals you prepare in, obviously, one pot. I've tagged about a dozen recipes I'll try over the coming weeks, intending to substitute Louisiana seafood for the Atlantic and Pacific varieties that predominate.

One Pan, Two Plates by Carla Snyder is a similar concept, but intended to produce a meal for two, which is what I do most nights.

I've included a recipe from each of the three books below; drop me an email if you've got a favorite you think I should take a look at.susan@kitchenandculture.com

Enjoy this week's recipes, share them with family and friends, and, as always, let me know what's on your mind. Also, keep in mind that food banks struggle this time of year; consider making a donation if at all possible.

Best regards,

Susan Ford

Christmas Parades

Extraordinary Landscapes

Three-Cheese Mac and Crispy Prosciutto

Three-Cheese Mac and Crispy Prosciutto

From One Pan, Two Plates, this is a rich, hearty entrée for a cold winter night. The recipe easily doubles (or triples), you'll just need a bigger pan. Feel free to substitute diced ham or crospy bacon for the prosciutto, if that's what you have on hand.

Corn and Shrimp Chowder

Corn and Shrimp Chowder

From One Pot, From the Kitchens of Martha Stewart Living, this is another fast, hearty dish for a cold winter day. I keep a bag of Louisiana shrimp in the freezer most of the time, and a sack of potatoes; hands on time is 25 minutes, it's ready in 40, making it perfect for a busy weeknight.

Pimento cheese biscuits

Pimento Cheese Biscuits

From Southern Breads, this combines two of mg favirutesL biscuits, and pimento cheese. Traditional P-C ingredients are baked into the biscuits themselves, and the author suggests you slather them with more P-C before serving, and provides a lagniappe recipe for it as well.
