New Orleans Grillades and Grits

New Orleans Grillades and Grits

This is a good one to keep warm on a back burner for people to help themselves to as they get up for a slow Christmas morning; it can even be made the night before, and left in the crockpot set to a lower heat setting. It's important to brown the meat first, to get that rich brown gravy. And use stone ground grits if you can. They take longer to cook, but the flavor and consistency are worth the time.

Artichoke and Seafood Dip

Artichoke and Seafood Dip

This rich appetizer dip has shrimp, crab, artichokes, and cheese. Served hot, it's great on crackers, toast points, or just off a spoon. Use jarred cooked artichokes, and it comes together in just a few minutes.

Italian Butterball Cookies

Italian Butterball Cookies

These cookies were one of my mother's favorite -- and not just around the holidays, although they were always on her holiday baking list. Also known as Russian Tea Cakes and Mexican Wedding Cookies. This simple recipe can be prepared a day or two in advance, even -- just bring the dough back to room temperature before baking.
