The Lt. Governor's annual tourism summit concludes today, after three packed days of networking, board meetings, socializing, eating, and FUN. Lt. Governor Jay Dardenne gave a State of the Industry update yesterday morning, sharing some astounding figures with the largest turnout ever for the Summit. Last year tourists spent $10.8 billion dollars here — $807 million of that was tax revenue for the state. We saw an 18% increase in international visitors last year, a record number, the highest increase in the country. The Southeast Tourism Society named our Office of Tourism the Office of the year, a first time for us. Congratulations to Kyle Edmiston and his team, and the Lt. Governor's entire office on a great year. It's Festival Season! We have more festivals than there are days in the year, and September is starting to get busy. We've updated our events list with lots of new listings.; check it out here and plan your upcoming weekends. Email Jim if there's something you know of that isn't listed. Come visit! National Geographic Traveler is about to name Louisiana the "Weirdest Country in America", and we're proud of that! Vote early, vote often: USA Today has October's Louisiana Seafood Festival as a candidate for Top Specialty Food Festivals in America. Right now some pumpkin festival in Hampshire is winning, so get clicking, people. You can vote once every 8 hours in each browser you use, and probably each mobile device. Click here, scroll to the bottom and vote. And come to the festival - we're sponsoring the cooking demonstration stage as usual. Also: Presale for Emeril's wildly popular Boudin, Bourbon, and Beer ends Sunday, August 31st; Lava Cantina in Baton Rouge throws its first every Lavapalooza with music, food, and more that same day. Our Cajun Comfort Food issue mails early next week; it's not too late to get your name on the subscription list if you're not already a subscriber. Enjoy this week's recipes, share them with family and friends, and, as always, let me know what's on your mind.
